Magnitude 5.3 earthquake triggers swarm of earthquake south of the Salton Sea

The USGS map shows the location of earthquake swarms.

Late Saturday morning, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake swarm shook the southern tip of Salton Lake near Calipatria in the Imperial Valley.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious injuries. A clerk at a truck stop in Carpatria said some items in the store fell off the shelves, but everything was working fine.

The United States Geological Survey reported a herd of more than 30 earthquakes of magnitude 2 and above, beginning at 10:46 a.m. and continuing into the afternoon.

It is the largest in an earthquake that occurred at 10:56 am and was felt throughout the San Diego area.

The other two earthquakes in the herd were measured above 4 degrees.

NBC7 said calls arrived at the station to report tremors in Santee, Chula Vista and Tijuana.
