A swarm of earthquakes continues to shake the Salton Sea in California | National

SACRAMENTO, CA – A swarm of hundreds of magnitude 5.3 earthquakes rocked the Salton Sea in California on Saturday and Sunday, the US Geological Survey reports.

Other earthquakes in the swarm ranged from less than 2.5 to 4.6 degrees, according to the USGS. More than a dozen hits have occurred since midnight Saturday.

The 5.3-magnitude quake struck at a depth of 3 miles at 10:55 a.m. PT on Saturday, according to the US Geological Survey. Dozens of people, some as far away as San Francisco and Arizona, reported feeling the quake to the agency.

Several earthquakes in the 4.0 range have followed in the previous 10 minutes. Dozens of tremors followed the largest earthquake.

“Today’s swarm is not close enough to the San Andreas Fault to cause concern,” seismologist Lucy Jones wrote on Twitter.

Jones also wrote on Twitter that earthquake swarms are common in Imperial Valley and said this swarm appears to be fading away.

The scale measures the energy released by the earthquake source, says the USGS. It replaces the old Richter scale.
