Signing of the San Jose Earthquakes Project Chosen by George Assumani

The San Jose Earthquakes announced last week that they have signed the 2021 MLS SuperDraft by selecting George Assumani. However, while he is contracted this year with club options until the 2024 season, at the moment he will not be on the first team’s active roster, possibly because he is an international player.

Asomani was drafted by Earthquakes in the second round of the 2021 North Carolina Draft. After being selected, he played the spring season with North Carolina State, spending two years in total. Prior to that, he played college football at Monroe College.

“We felt fortunate to be able to select George in the second round of SuperDraft and believe he has promising qualities that we can build upon,” Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli said in a team statement. “After enlisting, he finished the 2020-21 season with North Carolina before arriving in San Jose and impressing him with his work ethic and sportsmanship. We intend to be patient as George develops and want to accompany him as he continues to grow at the level of MLS competition.

“We would like to commend the support of NC State, particularly Coach Kiefer, for helping to pave the collective path for George to a unique perspective on life. We know that his college degree and the opportunity to become a professional means a lot to George and his family in Ghana.”

It’s unclear at this point if Asomani could make the first-team squad at some point this season or whether the international slots situation won’t work out in 2021 and he’ll have to make do with the club’s U-23 squad, or perhaps go for Loaned to Team USL this year, with an eye on possible squad formation next year. This could be a roster maneuver or just give him a slightly better chance of joining the roster next season, as we’ll see.
