“The post-mortem report says there was an explosion in the mouth. We have not caught any of the culprits. We do not yet know what caused the explosion,” said Ali, adding that the animal was one month pregnant. .

Kerala’s chief wildlife keeper, Surendra Kumar, said the matter was under investigation.

He said local villagers sometimes leave pineapples and other sweet fruit filled with firecrackers around their fields to keep wild boars away, which could have caused the explosion in the mouth of the elephant.

“(The explosion) fractured the bones and caused a lot of damage to the mouth. The animal could not eat and became weak. And then it died,” he said.

The elephant was found injured on May 23, but moved away when forest officials and a veterinarian tried to immobilize him for treatment, according to Ali.

She was found two days later, standing in the river. “To give treatment, it must be immobilized but we cannot use a tranquilizer while it is in the water because the animal can drown,” said Ali.

Two other elephants were brought in to drive the injured animal out of the water, but she refused to move and remained there until her death, added Ali.

The death of the elephant sparked national outrage. Indian Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said Thursday that the central government had taken “a very serious note” of the incident.

“We will not leave any stones unreturned to properly investigate and catch the culprit (s). It is not an Indian culture to feed firecrackers and kill,” he said on Twitter.

Environmentalists estimate that India has some 27,000 wild elephants, but their habitat is increasingly under pressure as human settlements encroach on nature reserves.
