Dear Doctor: Why did the blood bank refuse my donation?

Dear Dr. Cockroach: I recently donated blood to a local blood bank. This has been done many times in the past. Three weeks later, I received a letter saying that my blood was unacceptable and unacceptable because it responded to HTLV-1 and -2. I had my blood retested, but all went back to negative, why can’t I donate again? –MB

Answer: Human T-cell lymphotrophic virus is rare in the United States and Canada, and 95% of people who find the virus in their blood never develop symptoms. However, it can cause two different disorders: adult T-cell leukemia / lymphoma and HTLV-1-related myelopathy (also known as tropical spastic paralysis).

This virus is an HIV-related retrovirus (HIV was originally called HTLV-3), but it does not cause anything like the symptoms of HIV. However, like HIV, it can take years or even decades for symptoms to appear after infection.

The virus is especially common on tropical islands such as Japan, Africa, the Caribbean Sea and Papua New Guinea. It can be transmitted to the mother by breastfeeding, sexual contact, blood transfusion, or needle sharing.

All blood donors are screened for HTLV-1 and HTLV-2. The positive rate of repeat blood donors is very low. Unless there is exposure as in endemic countries between the last donation and the present, a positive blood test can be wrong-there is no perfect test.

It may be appropriate to consult an infectious disease specialist. Additional tests, such as PCR tests, may help determine if you are really infected with the virus.

The Food and Drug Administration has released guidance to allow people to donate blood again after detection of HTLV-1 or -2. Your doctor and blood bank should review this.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
