Breastfeeding associated with lower blood pressure in young children
“You might have thought that the differences would be apparent just before or during puberty, but the fact that these differences were seen as early as 3 years old is the fact that breastfeeding is a life-cycle metabolic programming. It shows that we are participating in, “Weldman Winter wrote. , Professor of Pediatrics at Rowan University Cooper Medical School.
In this study, we analyzed data on the length of time an infant was breastfed and compared it to blood pressure at age 3.
“Unexpectedly, the duration of breastfeeding was irrelevant, whether it was two days, two weeks, two months, or two years,” Azad said. “Breastfeeding improved blood pressure profile.”
According to Azad, a “dose response” is common in relation to protection from infections and asthma, meaning “longer is better”.
The official recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics is to breastfeed for the first 6 months and then continue with complementary foods such as baby cereals, fruits and vegetables for over a year.
The World Health Organization recommends the same for the first 6 months and will continue breastfeeding and supplements until age 2 and older.
Breastfeeding “important” immediately after childbirth
Previous studies attempting to investigate the association between breastfeeding and blood pressure in children are inconsistent, perhaps due to different definitions of breastfeeding, the study states.
Researchers in the current study have classified children based on the duration of breastfeeding on the first day of their lives. One such category was “early limited breastfeeding,” which is defined as breastfeeding that occurred only in hospitals.
Unlike previous studies on this subject, Azad said the study was unique because he had this very detailed information about breastfeeding in the hospital after childbirth. This information led us to conclude that even a limited 1-3 days of breastfeeding in the hospital is associated with a decrease in blood pressure at age 3.
“The first few days are really important,” Azad said.
The reduction in blood pressure seen in breast-fed children is important when compared to adult blood pressure levels associated with a lower risk of conditions such as high blood pressure and stroke, said lead researcher Dr. Kozeta Miliku. I have. Head of Clinical Science for McMaster University and CHILD Cohort Studies in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
“The findings we made about breastfeeding and blood pressure may be clinically relevant,” Milik said. “As a new mom, this study makes a lot of sense to me because it’s important to understand that every drop is important.”
Any amount can help, but sustained breastfeeding should still be supported, Milik added.
Azad has recognized a variety of reasons why women do not breastfeed. Women may not be educated about the effects and may be embarrassed by their social attitude towards breastfeeding in public. All of this must be recognized and addressed by policy makers and healthcare providers, she said.
In light of that finding, the authors of the study emphasized the need for immediate breastfeeding support and increased education about breastfeeding for new and expected mothers.
Similarly, Feldman-Winter said the study supports a policy of “working to improve obstetric care practices that support the initiation of breastfeeding.”
Azad and Milik hope to continue this cohort and monitor whether these differences in blood pressure levels at age 3 affect the health of participants until adulthood. They are also trying to learn more about first and breast milk and understand why they are associated with reduced adverse health effects.
Breastfeeding resources
- Make sure your baby’s mouth is wide open and his chin and nose are leaning against his chest.
- Your baby should put as many areolas in his mouth as possible and feed rhythmically in short bursts.
- If you hear your baby swallowing regularly and your nipples feel comfortable, you are breastfeeding properly.
Signs of false breastfeeding include the baby’s head not matching the body, the baby sucking only the nipple but not the areola, and the baby’s cheeks getting stuck inside.
