20 children with COVID-19 at a national children’s hospital
As of Monday, five children were being treated for COVID-19 in the hospital ICU, two of whom are currently on mechanical ventilation.
Columbus, Ohio — Chief Expert at the National Children’s Hospital details the increase in children hospitalized for COVID-19 and respiratory illness during Monday’s briefing, as more children get vaccinated as they return to classroom I urged my parents.
In a week, the number of patients receiving COVID-19 treatment in hospitals has almost doubled to about 20. Of these patients, Chief Medical Officer Rustin Morse states that 75% have acute illness.
As of Monday, five children were in the ICU of a hospital receiving COVID-19 treatment, two of whom are currently on a ventilator, Morse said.
Briefings take place while health officials say there is an increase in reported cases of RSV. A common respiratory virus that usually causes mild cold-like symptoms in children.
Just last week, the Ohio Department of Health reported an “unexpected” increase in respiratory illness in children such as RSV, parainfluenza virus, and rhinovirus.
As of Monday, approximately 40 children are in the hospital receiving treatment for RSV.
“This is very unusual in the summer, which is the amount you would normally see in the winter months, not in the summer months,” Morse said.
Despite the recent surge, Mr Morse said the hospital was not addressing capacity issues. Currently, Nationwide Children’s has a capacity of 70%.
“We don’t feel any distractions, keep patients away, and continue to keep patients away from referrals to hospitals that need pediatric care,” Morse said. Also added that it was good.
Still, Morse pointed out concerns about increased intake in pediatric patients as more children return to face-to-face learning.
“The increase in COVID-19 could be approaching a dangerous situation,” said Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, director of health at Ohio, at a press conference last Thursday.
