Parents of NICU babies in Auckland Hospital test positive for Covid-19

The Ministry of Health confirmed that parents of babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Auckland City Hospital tested positive for Covid-19.

The Auckland District Health Commission advised the ministry that movements to and from the NICU were restricted and the DHB was testing all staff. Baby in the unit as a precautionary measure.

A positive test may mean that some pregnant women will be transferred to another maternity ward in a nearby facility if the baby is likely to require NICU care.

According to the ministry, the first study of DHB suggests that the risk to babies within the unit is low.

there were 33 new cases announced on Sunday, 1 in Waikato, 32 in Auckland, and it is unknown whether the cases detected in the NICU are included.

Of these cases, 15 are not yet linked. Two are possible links and three are from one family.There is 5 active subclusters I’m in Auckland now.

The NICU is for premature babies or newborns who are ill at birth and need additional medical needs. The unit accepts babies born 32 weeks ago.

according to ADHB websiteMothers in the postnatal ward can have two designated visitors, one at a time between 7 am and 8 pm.

Support personnel can stay overnight if a single room can be provided, after signing an agreement on what is expected during the stay.

The ministry said all babies in the NICU and recently discharged babies are closely monitored as part of ongoing care and treatment.

Health authorities are working to identify patients and staff who are considered contacts.

According to the ministry, DHB will manage the level of staff until everyone can safely return to work.
