NYC Anime Convention Didn’t Spread Omicron Widely – NBC New York
After attending an anime convention in New York City at the end of last year, when a person tested positive for Omicron, health officials competed to determine if the indoor rally was a super-spreading event. ..
That wasn’t the case, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ended Thursday. Extensive masking, vaccination, and good airflow at the Javits Center prevented the spread of highly contagious Omicron variants.
Investigators found 119 infections from about 53,000 people who attended the event during the three days of November.
A Minnesota man at the Anime NYC competition became one of the first Americans to be diagnosed with Omicron. Omicron spread more easily than previous versions of the coronavirus and surged nationwide during the winter.
According to the CDC, the case of Omicron was found in a small social circle of men, while the other cases were found to be due to an older delta-type subspecies.
“This massive event did not lead to a widespread infection with Omicron,” the investigator wrote in one of two studies published by the CDC.
The Minnesota man was completely vaccinated and had a booster. While in New York, he stayed on vacation rentals with three other participants and kept in close contact with about 30 people during his five-day visit.
Sixteen of the men’s close associates were infected. According to investigators, all were vaccinated and no one was hospitalized or died.
