Indianapolis (Wish) —Breast cancer remains a major cancer in women, but it does not have to be a death sentence.
One Indiana mammographer shares her cancer recovery story to encourage others.
Mildred Scott has been a mammographer since 1980. She has seen technology go a long way, but she also sees the risk of breast cancer diagnosis. She wants her story to encourage others to prioritize their health.
Forty years after Scott implemented his first mammogram, technology has come a long way. The passion for work is still strong, but the real reward is to help guide others through what can be a horrifying process.
“It was a blessing because I was in the right place and at the right time when I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” Scott said.
As Ascension St. Vincent Mammogler, she has seen many others diagnosed with cancer. At the age of 48 in 2004 she changed her place. Her doctor found calcification in one of her breasts and her biopsy revealed cancer.
“The diagnosis made me a patient within 10 minutes of being a mammogram,” Scott said.
Her faith helped her, but she also knew she found it early. Scott said it is important to be consistent with all types of annual exams. It can be difficult to find her time because the woman has a leading role in the family. Scott said she would make time.
“Statistics tend to take longer for women of the same color to get a mammogram, and without regular screening, the diagnosis is even worse,” says Scott.
Black women see greater disparities, but overall women often refrain from screening because they don’t want to know that they are scared. Scott has no family history of breast cancer and nevertheless visited her.
“That was my moment of truth, because you never think it will be you,” Scott said.
