Florida AG Warns About Fake Coronavirus Contact Tracking Calls

Attorney General Ashley Moody said the Floridas need to be careful when answering calls from contact tracers. They should not ask for your Social Security number.

Tallahassee, Florida — Contact tracking is an important factor in slowing the spread of COVID-19 as the number of new coronavirus cases continues to grow throughout Florida.

The Florida Department of Health reported on Wednesday 5,508 new cases of COVID-19. This is the best daily record of new cases since follow-up began.

Contact tracking The process of contacting individuals infected with a particular infectious disease and tracking where they were to identify who else was exposed.

Contact tracers basically try to figure out who the infected person has physically contacted over a period of time. This includes family members, friends, important strangers, and strangers.

The Department of Health typically employs about 500 full-time epidemiologists who can track contacts. It hired 359 additional epidemiologists as temporary staff.

Currently, more than 1,600 people, including undergraduate students, epidemiologists, and other staff, are involved in contact tracking all positive COVID-19 cases in Florida. DOH has also hired an additional 400 contact tracers and 200 illness investigators through a third-party agency.

According to the ministry, staff are well prepared to meet current operational demands, but will be ready to further increase the number of contact tracers based on operational needs, if needed.
