(Center Square) – Maricopa County has launched a campaign to mitigate the effects of mosquito bites.
The county wants to reduce the number of mosquito bites people face and help fight the effects of bites. The county plans to do so in a campaign called Fight the Bite.
“If you’re bitten by a mosquito, it’s more than a stimulus. It can cause serious illness and sometimes even be fatal,” the county said in a statement. “West Nile virus is a disease caused by a virus that spreads through mosquito bites. Many people may be asymptomatic, but others are very ill and can even die from the virus. 2021 A new record for Marikopa County was set for one year of cases, identifying about 1,500 cases, more than four times the previous record, which slightly exceeded 350 in 2004. “
The campaign has four Rs that people recommend doing to combat this issue.
The first R is “repulsion”. We recommend using an insect repellent that contains one of the following ingredients:
- DEET
- Picaridin
- Lemon eucalyptus oil (OLE) (3 years old and over)
- IR3535
- Paramentandiol (PMD) (3 years and older only)
- 2-Undecanone
The second R is “Delete”. It tells people to remove the standing water from their homes and gardens.
“Mosquitoes need water to breed, so be sure to tilt and throw even a small amount of water from places such as flowerpots, bird baths, leaking hoses, and pipes,” says Maricopa County.
After that, “repair” begins. The county recommends repairing damaged window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out.
And the last R is “remind”. The county wants to remind people “especially when mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn, to family, friends, and neighbors about mosquito safety.”
The Maricopa County Environmental Services Department conducts annual mosquito monitoring and eradication. The county states that it installs more than 800 regular mosquito traps each week to inspect mosquito diseases.
