Bird flu found in red-tailed hawks in Skagit County
Health officials say bird flu has just been confirmed in Skagit County, with a total of 11 counties infected with the virus.
Skagit County, Wash. ―――― A case of bird flu has been identified in Skagit County, according to the Washington State Department of Health.
In a news release, the agency said the red-tailed hawk was collected on May 11 and tested positive for bird flu or HPAI H5N1, a type of bird flu.
“We can speculate that bird flu is as active in Skagit County, as in much of Washington,” officials said Tuesday.
Health officials have warned that the avian influenza virus can spread to certain domesticated bird species, causing illness and killing chickens, pheasants, turkeys and other poultry. The virus often spreads to poultry through interaction with wild birds.
The general public is advised to avoid contact with wild birds, especially sick and dead wild birds.
