Two prisoners and 16 sheriff employees test positive for coronavirus-News-Austin American Stateman
Two new prisoners and 16 Travis County Sheriff office employees tested positive on Monday for COVID-19, a disease caused by the coronavirus.
Officials on Monday said one of the infected prisoners had been quarantined for symptoms before being positive for the virus, and the other had been quarantined.
According to authorities, all newly booked inmates will be held in a single room for the first 10-14 days to prevent COVID-19 from entering the general population of the prison.
Both prisoners were transferred to a unit reserved for those who tested positive for the virus. Inmates who test positive will remain in a single room and will be examined by a health care worker twice a day.
Officials on Monday said one of the two infected prisoners was quarantined by a medical professional and released from the unit.
In addition to the inmates, 16 Travis County Sheriff officials tested positive, according to authorities.
Authorities said the infected employee worked in the Corrections, Law Enforcement, and Management Offices. Officials said these employees include both sworn workers and civilian employees.
The first case of the virus in a prisoner population was reported at the end of last month.
Officials on Monday said 333 inmates have been screened so far, 11 positive cases and 44 are still pending.
Three employees of law enforcement, 22 for modification, and 9 for management and support also gave positive results.
