Girl catches bird flu after eating sick poultry

The patient was a 5-year-old girl from northern Phu Tho province who had previously eaten sick chicken and duck meat. On October 5, she began coughing, had a fever, and her family medicine stopped working.

Two days later, her skin and eyes began to turn yellow and she began to vomit. Not confirmed.

She was then taken to the Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital in Phu Tho, where doctors confirmed her previous diagnosis. On October 8, she was transferred to the National Children’s Hospital and tested positive for her A/H5 bird flu two days later. Her second test by the National Institute of Health and Epidemiology on October 17 confirmed the results.

The girl is currently suffering from respiratory failure, acute liver failure, renal failure, septic shock and A/H5 bird flu. She continues to receive treatment at the National Children’s Hospital.

The Hoet Center for Disease Control (CDC) said it had not found any sick poultry living near the area where the girl lived, and no one had bird flu. However, in March, the Huth Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sub-Division recorded a case of bird flu among the local poultry population.

The exact A/H5 strain that infected the girl has not been identified. The CDC has created a list of 65 of her contacts so that samples can be taken to monitor her health. The five family homes and barns were also sanitized.

Since 2003, Vietnam has documented 128 human cases of A/H5, all of them infected with the H5N1 virus. A total of 64 people died, according to the National Institute of Health and Epidemiology. In 2014, his two cases of her H5N1 occurred in the southern provinces of Binh Phuoc and Dong Thap, both of which died. They had prior contact with sick poultry.

Bird flu in humans can cause respiratory infections ranging from mild fever and cough to severe pneumonia and even death.
