Bedford, Massachusetts-Bedford officials remind residents of some tips to avoid Eastern Equine Encephalitis or EEE contracts. Mosquitoes are the most active in Massachusetts from June to August. Most adult mosquitoes are found during the day in moist, shaded areas protected from sunlight.
Mosquitoes can spread diseases that can make humans and animals sick. EEE is a rare but serious illness caused by a virus spread by an infected mosquito. In Massachusetts, the virus is most commonly found in mosquitoes found in and around freshwater and hardwood swamps.

Do not use DEET products for infants under 2 months. Also, use it at a concentration of 30% or less for older children. Lemon eucalyptus oil should not be used by children under 3 years. 5. Avoid outdoor areas with obvious mosquito activity, such as forests and wetlands.
6. Animals and pets – keep vaccinations and medications for animals or pets up to date. Talk to your veterinarian about approved mosquito repellents for use in animals and vaccinations to prevent EEE and WNV. Keep animals indoors or in protected areas during peak periods of mosquito activity.
