Half of California exceeds coronavirus threshold
Nearly half of the counties in California are being monitored as the number of cases of coronavirus increases with the recent additions of Placer and Sutter counties.
Sacramento, California — Both Sutter and Placer counties were put on the California Department of Health’s data watch list on Thursday.
According to the Department of State, Sutter County had about 127 coronavirus infections per 100,000 people in 14 days. Sutter and Yuba counties have an average of about 30 new cases of coronavirus per day, averaging five months ago.
Placer County has also seen an increase in cases, but it was put on the watch list as hospitals in the county saw a surge in hospitalization. According to the California Department of Public Health, the number of people with COVID-19 in county hospitals increased by an average of 36.4% over three days.
If Placer and Sutter counties remain on the list for three days, all bars in the county will be closed and restaurants and other businesses will have to shut down indoors.
Sutter county officials say the outbreak is largely due to gatherings of family and friends.
The two largest hospitals in Placer County are located near the border between Placer and Sacramento County and provide care to residents of both counties and other neighboring counties.
