Fentanyl vaccine can prevent opioid overdose

ATLANTA, GA (Atlanta News First) – A new vaccine in development could help metro Atlanta fight the opioid crisis. From 2019 to 2021, fentanyl-related overdose deaths in Georgia increased by 232%.
Jocelyn Wallace is a recovered heroin addict who has been sober for six years.

“This is a pandemic and people like me are being forced out of the house every day,” Wallace said.
However, her road to recovery was not difficult. She first became addicted to painkillers at the age of 16 after a car accident. Shortly after, it was heroin and her life began to run wild.
“I’ve overdosed more than 21 times, more than I can count, but Narcan saved my life, and today I’m executive director of a recovery community organization,” Wallace said.
Two years ago she founded Never Alone Clubhouse in Douglasville. This is a peer support non-profit organization dedicated to helping people recover.
“Because I speak out loud, it doesn’t have to be taboo, so others don’t have to die quietly. Recovery is expected and recovery is real,” Wallace said.
The statistics are staggering, with over 150 people dying each day from opioid overdoses. Now, a research team led by the University of Houston has developed a vaccine that targets the dangerous synthetic opioid fentanyl.
“Our vaccines create antibodies against fentanyl. These antibodies, when consumed, bind to fentanyl and can trigger euphoria centers, respiratory depression and opioid overdose death.” “We feel that combining this with current treatments will be a game changer,” said Colin Heil of the University of Houston.
This breakthrough discovery could have a significant impact on the national opioid epidemic by becoming a relapse preventative for those trying to stop using opioids.
“The number of lives it can change, touch and save is probably unquantifiable,” Wallace said.
