Orange County reported 1,251 new cases of COVID-19 and an additional 9 deaths on Saturday, bringing the county total to 23,901 cases and 421 deaths.
Earlier this week, Frank Kim, of Orange County, said the county’s recent increase in infections was expected as authorities tightened restrictions on economic activity, but young adults were seeing a significant increase.
“One of the interesting or worrisome dynamics seen in the positive rate over the past few weeks is an increase in new infections in young people aged 17 to 24 and 24 to 34 years.
According to Kim, infectious diseases in these age groups have been on the rise recently.
They don’t necessarily need to be hospitalized at the same rate as older groups, he said, “of course they have parents and uncles in their community.” They are also sick.
Six of the nine deaths reported on Saturday were residents of skilled nursing homes and three were not living in nursing homes, according to the Orange County Healthcare Agency.
Of the total county county, 1,315 were residents of skilled nursing homes, 422 were prisoners, and 119 were homeless, officials said.
Of all deaths from the county’s coronavirus, 212 were residents of skilled nursing homes, 15 were welfare home residents, and two were homeless.
The number of inpatients fell from 672 to 671 on Friday, while the number of intensive care patients increased from 227 to 231.
The county has reported 303,201 coronavirus tests so far, with 9,982 recovery recorded.
