DRC faces COVID, a new Ebola outbreak trying to control measles | Health
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Ebola spreads west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with nearly 50 cases reported in large areas bordering the Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic.
WHO emergency and emergency expert Mike Ryan said on Monday that 48 cases had been confirmed in Congo, Ecuador since the authorities announced a new outbreak on June 1.
There were three more probable cases, killing a total of 20 people.
“This is still a very active outbreak and I think it is still a big concern,” Ryan told News Briefings.
He added that the province, which includes part of the Congo River, is a large geographical area with linked communities and that people have traveled long distances.
The latest outbreak is the 11th DRC since scientists first characterized the disease in 1976.
WHO said it vaccinated 11,327 people against Ebola last month.
Ebola virus causes hemorrhagic fever and spreads through direct contact with the body fluids of infected people who suffer from severe vomiting and diarrhea.
The virus outbreak on the other side of the country, which began in August 2018, killed more than 2,277 people. WHO declared an outbreak in Ituri and North Kivu on 25 June.
According to experts, the use of vaccines and rapid containment efforts such as mobile hand-washing stations and door-to-door education campaigns have prevented the disease.
Despite the low number of infections in new outbreaks, Ryan warns: “In the age of COVID, it is very important to keep an eye on these other emerging diseases.”

One of the poorest countries in the world, DRC also addresses the measles epidemic, which killed more than 6,000 people, and COVID-19, which infected more than 3,000 people and killed 188 people.
