Impact of COVID-19 on complicated urinary tract infections: challenges and multidrug resistance
In this third mini podcast episode, FIDSA Ph.D. Kim Leutner, an infectious disease clinician at the University of Southern Nevada Medical Center, discusses the unintended effects of COVID-19: urinary Dive deeper into tract infections (UTIs).
Management and infection prevention practices were disrupted during the pandemic, leading to challenges in isolating patients and promoting microbial spread. Longer hospital stays and increased exposure to antibiotics increased the risk of multidrug-resistant colonization and infection. In addition, the use of antibiotics has increased, requiring longer and more extensive treatment, Leutner said.
However, it is hoped that returning to normal habits and improving infection control measures will address these issues.
The pathogens that cause urinary tract infections have remained relatively unchanged, primarily Gram-negative bacteria such as: Escherichia coli and Klebsierra pneumonia from gastrointestinal flora. The main difference is the prevalence of resistant pathogens due to increased use of antibiotics during the pandemic, Leutner explained.
Nonetheless, multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria continue to pose a problem in medical settings. Prolonged hospital stays and multiple infections associated with COVID-19 have increased the use of antibiotics and enabled the persistence of resistant pathogens.
