Victoria Health issues warning after surge in congenital cases
As Victoria fought the second wave of the coronavirus, the state was warned about another illness, the surge of syphilis.
The number of cases of sexually transmitted diseases is increasing in Victoria, from 640 last year to 634 in 2014.
Victoria Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton today issued a warning about the disease because of the risk that syphilis poses to pregnant women and the unborn child.

The disease can have disastrous consequences for the unborn child and can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, prematurity and other side effects.

Health Victoria has called for “active screening” of all pregnant women, and for inclusion of additional tests for mothers who may be at high risk of transmitting syphilis to their babies.
In addition to regular prenatal screening for syphilis in early pregnancy, they recommend that at-risk women need to repeat the syphilis test during 28-32 weeks gestation and during childbirth.
Sexual contact in pregnant women with syphilis also requires follow-up and treatment to prevent reinfection of the mother.
