BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — After the dark winter season, it's finally time for trees to bloom, fresh grass to bloom, and flowers to bud. But with it comes a period of runny nose, itchy eyes, and sore throat.
This year's allergy flare-ups are even worse, said Dr. Puja Vitalani, a family medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente.
“This is definitely the time of year when we want to take control of spring so we can enjoy it,” Vitalani said.
The cause of allergies can be traced back to the pollen released by plants that enters our respiratory system.
Allergy symptoms include:

- Dry eye
- congestion
Although similar to a cold, allergies likely don't cause a fever, Vitalani says.
Recommended treatments for allergies include:
- Over-the-counter medications such as oral antihistamines and nasal sprays
- close the windows at home
- Take off your shoes and jacket when indoors
Vitalani said the process is trial and error because certain drugs affect others differently. However, if you are experiencing extreme discomfort and home treatments are not effective, consult your doctor.
