Dr. Howard Markell, a medical historian at the University of Michigan, joined State side Talk about the history of vaccine development and what it means and what it doesn’t mean when the coronavirus vaccine is finally ready.

One of the major problems with COVID-19 is that it is a new virus, previously unseen in humans. “We’re talking about RNA viruses, and it’s especially difficult to make a vaccine. Another well-known RNA virus is HIV, and there’s no vaccine for it yet.

“I’m worried that the vaccine might be put on the market,” Markel said. “It’s exactly the name of the project Warp Speed. That means naming a vaccine project after something derived from Star Trek is by no means a good idea.”

But mistakes do happen. In 1955, several batches of polio vaccine contained live strains of the virus that infected thousands of children. 200 of those children were paralyzed and 10 died. However, this turned out to be a “moment on the horizon” for the vaccine. Once corrected, their parents continued to successfully vaccinate their children against polio.

Marker also talked about endangered groups like the African Americans who were the hardest hit in the pandemic. “I was reading the other day in the New York Times report of an interview between African-American communities fearing government-backed vaccines, specifically approved by Donald Trump and recalled it to the Tuskegee syphilis study.”

Bioethicists are discussing how to distribute the coronavirus vaccine and asking who should get it first. During the H1N1 pandemic, people said they were interested in getting the vaccine, but only 20% had it. In general, vaccines tend to be given in higher doses than those who want to be vaccinated, but Markel hopes this time will be different.

“It’s hard to imagine, but if more people want the vaccine than we want it, more people will make it, so for a while Hope to keep away.”
