Shingles vaccine offered to Jersey residents aged 60 and over
PA AverageMore Jersey residents are set to be able to receive the shingles vaccination following the Public Health Department's decision to lower the eligibility age for the vaccine from 70 to 60.
According to the island's government, the shingles virus becomes more common as the population ages, with about one in four adults experiencing shingles in their lifetime.
The vaccine is currently available to Jersey residents aged 50 and over who have a weakened immune system, those turning 60 and 70 in 2024, and people aged 70 to 79 who have not previously received the shingles vaccine.
A catch-up program is being planned to offer the vaccine to Islanders born between 1955 and 1963.
Islanders born in those years will be sent letters inviting them to get vaccinated as part of the program.
Health protection senior nursing adviser Emma Baker said: “It's fantastic that Islanders can now be offered the vaccine when they turn 60 rather than 70.”
“The UK is looking at 10 years to catch up so I’m pleased that with the support of GP practices vaccinating in Jersey, our catch up programme will take seven years.”
