Inner Mongolia city of China issues post-mortem warning of gland plague patients
Authorities in Beijing-Inner Mongolia’s China region cities issued a warning after a patient with gland plague died of multiple organ failure, state media reported Saturday.
Plague outbreaks are not uncommon in China, but they are becoming increasingly rare. From 2009 to 2018, China reported 26 cases and 11 deaths.
According to the People’s Daily, patients have been confirmed to have glandular plague, citing a statement from the Health Commission of the City of Bayan Nur. Known as “black death” in the Middle Ages, gland plague is a highly contagious and deadly disease that is predominantly spread to rodents.
The People’s Daily reported that the Commission had prevented the illness on Friday by the end of 2020 and issued a second-lowest third-level alert on a four-level system.
This represents the second death of a plague patient reported in the Inner Mongolia region this month.
On Thursday, authorities in Baotou, a city adjacent to Bayan Nur, reported that a patient with “enteric plague” died of a cardiovascular disorder.
Bayan Nur authorities closed the area where the deceased patient lived and isolated seven close contacts of the patient.
