New York State Department of Health encourages residents to get HIV tested
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The New York State Department of Health is offering free HIV self-testing kits to certain New York state residents.
The campaign will include social media and web advertising, with a priority given to Latinx, LGBTQ+ and Black women.
Eligible individuals will be provided with a discount code for a free self-test kit; everyone else can visit the AIDS Research Institute website for more information and resources.
State Health Officer Dr. James McDonald says self-testing is a tool to help people take control of their sexual health, protect others and reduce the transmission of HIV.
“Knowing how to prevent and control the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases is the 'freedom of knowing' that helps people have open discussions with their sexual partners and health care providers and take control of their sexual health,” Dr. MacDonald said in a statement. “HIV testing, including self-testing, is the first step anyone can take to find out their status.”
