Two Hantavirus Deaths Reported in Coconino County. What You Need to Know
Coconino County, Arizona (AZFamily) Officials are urging the public to be vigilant after two people have died from the hantavirus in Coconino County.
There have been three reported cases of hantavirus infection in the past 15 months, two of which have been fatal. The last reported case of hantavirus infection in Coconino County occurred in 2016.
Meanwhile, hantavirus activity is on the rise in Arizona: seven confirmed cases of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) and three deaths have occurred between January and July 2024. It is unclear where the third death occurred.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) HPS is a serious and sometimes fatal respiratory disease It is caused by infection with the Hantavirus.
Hantaviruses are transmitted by rodents, particularly the deer mouse, which is native to Arizona. Humans can become infected with the airborne virus by touching or handling objects contaminated with rodent urine, saliva, or feces.
Officials say the virus does not spread from person to person. Hantavirus can be found wherever there is rodent activity, even if no rats are found.
Symptoms of the virus include fever, headache, rapidly progressing muscle pain, and severe difficulty breathing.

- Before you begin cleaning, open all doors and windows, especially in areas that have been closed for long periods, such as garages and sheds that aren't used throughout the year.

Stop mice from getting inside your home by sealing and sealing all holes and gaps and removing outdoor junk and clutter. Move firewood piles, lumber and hay bales as far away from the house as possible.
Officials also recommend not leaving pet food on dishes and using tight-fitting lids on trash cans.
