West Nile virus: first case confirmed in Alameda County in 2020
Alameda County (California) — Another health threat in Alameda County — A dead bird found in Dublin last Friday was announced Monday as positive for the West Nile virus.
This is the county’s first 2020 West Nile case. Across the state, as of Monday, 81 bird carcasses, a sample of 675 mosquitoes, and 10 were West Nile virus-positive, the county announced in a news release.
The county said the birds were inspected on Friday after they were discovered and reported. Dead birds help counties monitor West Nile virus activity.
West Nile virus has no cure and is transmitted by the bites of infected mosquitoes.
According to the residents, residents should remove the water on site, wear mosquito repellent, make sure there are no holes in the door and window screens, and wear long, loose clothing. Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk.
Horse owners are advised to be vaccinated, as horses are particularly susceptible to the virus.
“This summer is very different from what we typically experience, but the West Nile virus is something we still need to worry about,” said release general manager Ryan Krausnitzer. “We haven’t detected a large number of mosquitoes in the areas where the birds were found, but every bite from a mosquito increases the risk of the West Nile virus.”
The county is keeping an eye out for mosquitoes in the area, looking for sources of water that mosquitoes can breed in, such as pools, buckets, tires, fountains, and rainwater drains.
One in five infected with the virus develops symptoms such as fever, headache, pain, arthralgia, vomiting and rash, and less than 1% of infected people have serious neurological disorders such as encephalitis and meningitis. , The county said. People over the age of 50 or with compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable to serious complications.
