Men and women use different biological systems to reduce pain
The research found the following:
- Blocking the opioid system with naloxone inhibited meditation-induced analgesia in the men, suggesting that the men relied on endogenous opioids for pain relief.
- Naloxone increased meditation-based analgesia in women, suggesting that women rely on non-opioid mechanisms to reduce pain.
- People with chronic pain, both men and women, found more pain relief from meditation than healthy participants.
“These results highlight the need for more gender-specific pain treatments, because many of the treatments we use are less effective in women than in men.” Zeidan said.
The researchers concluded that tailoring pain treatment to an individual's gender may improve patient outcomes and reduce dependence on and abuse of opioids.
“While there are clear differences in how men and women manage pain, until now we have not seen clear biological differences in the use of endogenous systems,” Professor Zeidan said. Differences based on pain processing are real and need to be more seriously considered when developing and prescribing pain treatments. ”
