Health authorities warn of potential “fall” in COVID-19 cases in Canada
Top Canadian doctors say they are working towards the best scenarios, but they are preparing for the worst. The so-called “fall peak” of COVID-19 cases across the country that are threatened to overwhelm the public health system.
Chief Health Officer Dr. Teresa Tam and Deputy Health Officer Dr. Howard Ndjou announced a new model of the coronavirus on Friday, highlighting the potential surge in cases that are many times worse than what has been seen in Canada so far. reported.
A Canadian Public Health Agency (PHAC) document indicates that authorities are aiming for a “slow burn” scenario in which the number of cases remains low so that the public health system can handle the influx of patients. But authorities are also planning a “reasonable worst scenario.” In this scenario, the spikes in infections are followed by peaks and troughs, imposing excessive demands on the healthcare system.
Mr Tum noted that this fall’s surge could coincide with the flu and cold seasons, putting strains on hospitals and other health resources.
She declined to give a figure on what the caseload would look like, but said health officials should plan “at least a few times worse than their previous experience.” There are still many unknowns about COVID-19, such as whether it will accelerate due to seasonality.
See | Dr. Teresa Tam, Chief Health Officer About the possibility of COVID-19 surge:
Tam said that what Canadians do now will determine how the infection spreads in the fall.
“By urging everyone in Canada to continue their public health practices, we continue to build capacity across our health, public health, and laboratory systems, allowing us to slow down the epidemic in preparation for when needed. We are most likely to lose to them. We will quickly launch a response to the larger revival.”
The number of new cases reported daily has increased in recent weeks, with the highest infection rates among people aged 20 to 39 years.
As businesses and schools reopen and more people return to work, Tam stressed that Canadians need to be careful to follow public health guidelines to avoid major backlash.
The main measures to limit outbreaks are:
- Case detection and separation.
- Contact tracking and quarantine.
- If possible, keep yourself away, wash your hands, and stay home.
- Use of the exposure notification app.
According to Njoo, Canada’s COVID-19 exposure notification app has been downloaded by about 1.9 million people, especially encouraging young people to go to pubs and nightclubs.
Case load expected to rise
The PHAC said in the short term, the case load could increase from 121,650 to 127,740 by August 23, and the death toll could increase from 8,980 to 9,115.
Most cases have been reported in Ontario and Quebec, but Nunavut has not recorded one case.
Patty Hajdu, Health Minister’s office, says the government knows that a second wave of COVID-19 is possible and is making the appropriate preparations.
“That’s why we have been careful “Why we started removing some public health measures and why we worked with the states and territories to establish a supply of PPE and medicinal products to keep Canada safe,” said Cay Davidson, a spokesperson for Haydu. Stated in a statement.
“PPE and drug deliveries continue to arrive at PHAC warehouses from domestic and international suppliers, but we are working with the states and territories to address future vaccine doses and potential second wave issues. Ready for your needs.”
Modeling information today is not for predicting what will happen, but for providing a snapshot of what can happen in a particular scenario. “Mountains and valleys” are projected to continue until 2022.
This is because when students return to the classroom within the next few weeks, they become more anxious about the potential for the outbreak.
British columbia Released its own modeling on ThursdayShows that the state’s COVID-19 curve is rising faster than its first outbreak in March, and that the second wave could be larger than the first by September Suggests.
Bonnie Henry, a state health official, said state contact tracking efforts could reduce the number of infections.
Top Canadian Doctors Revive If Canadians Succeed in Delaying COVID-19 Propagation, If Canadians Do Not Strictly Follow Public Health Guidelines for Physical Distance, Handwashing, and Restricted Gatherings Said there is a possibility.
