Extreme fever can cause older people to age faster, new research finds
Rachel Morello-Frosch, an environmental health scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, has seen several debate among scientists about whether epigenetic clocks are the best measure of aging. She said how to optimally measure biomarkers, and how they can be used to predict future health, is a “evolving space in the science field.”
Greg Wernius, an environmental epidemiologist at the Boston University School of Public Health, said that epigenetic changes are not necessarily bad either, and the study did not clarify whether they could reflect positive adaptation to fever rather than negative. Because the analysis was based on a single blood sample for each subject, “we actually don't have such longitudinal data,” says Jennifer Eilscher, professor of gerontology and sociology at the USC Leonard Davis Faculty and other author of the study.
Mariana Alkaya, professor of urban planning and public health at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said the study could open the door to future research into how interventions like air conditioning and more shade can cause adverse effects of aging.
“Now, the literature is very focused on 'Can you survive with extreme fever without medical intervention?”,” she said. In contrast, the study suggests that even if people are not at a healthy crisis or risk of death due to the heat, they “may still be effective.”
