When norovirus puts a strain on hospitals, tens of thousands of NHS staff become ill
Last week, more than 49,000 NHS staff members became ill every day as norovirus cases put an extra strain on hospitals.
Data from NHS England, released Thursday, shows an average of 1,094 patients were in hospitals with norovirus every day last week, with more hospitals continuing to operate “nearby capacity.”
This is a slight decline from 1,134 a week ago, but more than doubled the same period last year (470).
Hospital flu levels continue to decline, but remain higher than in this point in the past few years.
Last week, an average of 1,546 patients were hospitalized along with the flu. This is a slight decrease from the previous week (1,656), but 16% higher than the same period in the previous year (1,333).
Norovirus, also known as the winter vomiting bug, also has the disease of NHS staff members high as the flu and several other winter viruses are spreading.
What impact will this have?
Last week there was a shortage of approximately 49,223 staff per day. It's 8% higher than the same time last year.
NHS National Medical Director Stephen Powis said the staff were “tiring efforts,” urging the public to wash their hands frequently with soap and water.
He said: “Despite the sunny weather showing early signs of spring this week, these latest figures show that winter continues to work tirelessly to treat thousands of patients every day.
“Last month, the NHS lost around 44,000 bed days to the norovirus, adding to an already incredibly pressured bed occupancy level, and last year we have had the flu, RSV and staff absenteeism, but we're not in the woods yet.”
Meanwhile, last week, an average of 13,430 hospital beds per day were filled with patients worthy of discharge in the UK.
This is up from 13,017 the previous week, but below the winter peak of 14,087 in early February.
According to NHS England, almost half of these patients were in hospital for more than three weeks, leaving people discharged into environments such as social and community care.
What should I do if I have symptoms?
The main symptoms of noroviruses usually include feeling sick, being ill, and being ill and diarrhea, but according to the NHS, they usually start out abruptly.
Other symptoms include high temperatures, headaches, stomach pains and body pain.
Symptoms begin to ease within 2-3 days and can usually be treated at home.

To avoid the spread of norovirus, NHS England urges people to wash their hands frequently with soap and water, and if they feel unwell, not to mix with people until the symptoms are gone for two days, they are urging them to feel sick.
Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting thanked NHS staff for “uncontinuous work” in the face of winter pressures, saying, “While the latest numbers refer to slight easing in certain areas, health services are taking on a considerable burden.
“To ease the burden of pressure this season, we have achieved over 29 million vaccinations and ended up keeping doctors on the frontline, not picket line.”
