Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo reaches nearly 750 suspected cases, 177 deaths, regional risk upgraded to ‘very high’

Distrust in authorities complicates response
The Ebola strain involved in the outbreak is Bundibugyo, but there is no vaccine or treatment. Tedros said the WHO is working with other agency leaders to review vaccines, treatments and diagnostic tests in development.
It also convened a therapeutic R&D Blueprint Technical Advisory Group to recommend that two monoclonal antibodies be prioritized for clinical trials. But experts say a vaccine rollout is likely to take at least six to nine months.
TThe WHO advisory group also recommended that the antiviral drug oberdesivir be evaluated in a clinical trial with the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the Joint Open Research Consortium on Filoviruses as post-exposure prophylaxis in high-risk contacts of Ebola patients.
Tedros said several factors are driving the spread of the disease and complicating response efforts. The epicenter of the outbreak, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ituri and North Kivu provinces, has been hit hard by international aid cuts and armed conflict, causing large-scale displacement.
