PTI protests nationwide against Imran Khan’s detention, inflation – Pakistan Today

The PTI is holding nationwide protests in Islamabad, Peshawar and Lahore against Imran Khan’s imprisonment, inflation and rising fuel prices, despite Section 144 restrictions and police limitations.

Protesters demand release and medical treatment for Imran Khan

Leaders cite rising inflation, rising fuel prices and deteriorating law and order

Opposition warns of intensifying nationwide unrest if demands not met

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday staged protests in several cities across the country, including the federal capital, amid the imposition of Section 144 and tightened police restrictions, the party claimed.

A day earlier, opposition alliance Tehreek Tahaffuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) and PTI had jointly announced a call for nationwide protest on Friday against the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, rising inflation and other issues.

Protest in Islamabad on Lehtrar Road

In the federal capital, the protest took place on Lehtrar Road near Taramri Chowk under the leadership of PTI Islamabad President Aamir Mughal and led by general secretary Malik Aamir Ali.

PTI Islamabad Senior Vice President Raja Sajjad Dhanyal, Women’s Wing President Maimoona Kamal, Youth Wing President Murad Bukhari, representatives of Insaf Students’ Federation and other party leaders and workers participated in the protest.

The protesters demanded the release and proper medical treatment of the PTI founder and expressed concerns over rising inflation, deteriorating law and order situation and recent increase in prices of petroleum products.

Speaking to media on the occasion, PTI leaders said they were aware that Islamabad Police and other law enforcement agencies had made strict arrangements to prevent public gatherings in the capital.

“Section 144 was already in force in the federal capital, but we knew we had to hold a protest as it was in support of founding President Imran Khan and against inflation, which is seriously affecting the people,” they said.

They added that their demands included release of Imran Khan, control of inflation, reduction of oil prices and strengthening of rule of law in the country.

Aamir Mughal warned that if the government fails to resolve these issues, the PTI will be forced to launch a larger protest movement after Eid.

PTI demonstration in front of Peshawar press club

Besides, PTI supporters also staged a protest in front of the Peshawar press club. Speaking on the occasion, PTI leader Shandana Gulzar said the main aim of the movement was the release of Imran Khan and an end to what she called the “killing of innocent people” in the tribal districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

She said civilians in the province were targeted by drone strikes and bomb blasts, saying women and children were also among the victims.

“There is unrest, inflation and insecurity across the country,” she said, adding that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was being deprived of its share of gas, electricity and other resources by the federal government.

Gulzar also criticized the federal and Punjab governments, accusing them of economic mismanagement and political victimization of PTI workers and leaders.

She further said that rising inflation had severely affected household budgets, making it difficult for families to pay for education and basic expenses.

TTAP Punjab protest in front of Lahore Press Club

In Lahore, the Punjab chapter of Tehreek Tahaffuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) staged a protest in front of the Lahore Press Club in solidarity with the former prime minister and other political prisoners, demanding their immediate and unconditional release.

PTI workers and Haqooq-e-Khalq movement activists also participated in the protest in front of the Lahore Press Club to support their demands.

The protest was attended by political and social activists, including PTI leader Shayan Bashir Nawaz, Mian Akram Usman and Haqooq-i-Khalq party leaders such as Ammar Ali Jan and Haider Butt.

Participants condemned what they described as growing political repression in Punjab, citing a large police deployment at the protest site and alleged nighttime raids on the homes of political activists the day before.
