Spanish teen tennis player caught in firestorm after ball girl pushed confusion at French Open

Rising Spanish tennis star Rafael Jodar found himself in the middle of a firestorm on Friday after he was accused of pushing a ball girl at the French Open.

19-year-old Jodar was leaving the court after finishing a set against American Alex Michelsen when the ball girl got in his way.

As he raised his hand to say something to his father nearby, the girl momentarily lost her balance and was sent backwards – giving the impression of being pushed by Jodar and sending fans on social media into a frenzy.

However, the Spanish teenager denied pushing the girl after the match and theorized that she had tripped over a tarp on the pitch.

“She backed away, I mean I didn’t push her or anything,” Jodar said after beating Michelsen.

“I told my dad to give me the things he would give me after a bathroom break when I got back.

“But yeah, she was in the middle, so I think she was trying to get out of the way. She was going backwards, but I think she fell, but not because I [pushed] her.”

Jodar, who eventually defeated Michelsen 7-6(2), 6-7(5), 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a five-set thriller, also expressed his appreciation for the ball boys working at Roland Garros in the French preliminary round.

“Obviously, I appreciate all the work the ball kids do,” he said. “I know it’s hard because of the heat and the conditions to stay there, so I appreciate it. I could never push a ball kid.”

The ball girl’s apparent trip over the court cover isn’t the first time someone has tripped over something during the tournament at this year’s French Open.

Jodar will face compatriot Pablo Carreño Busta in the fourth round on Sunday.
