Rival events divide Turkey’s main opposition party – World
ANKARA: Turkey’s main opposition party, the CHP, was thrown into fresh disarray on Saturday when court-appointed leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu made his first visit to the party’s headquarters since a controversial decision canceled the party’s 2023 primaries.
Ozgur Ozel, the CHP leader ousted by the May 21 decision, called for an emergency congress, telling thousands at a rally in Ankara that the party “cannot be led by an appointed leader.”
Ozel became a leading opposition figure after the jailing last year of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a key rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The court ruling plunged the CHP, Turkey’s oldest political party, into crisis. Three days after the order, riot police forced their way into the party headquarters in Ankara, firing tear gas in dramatic scenes that underscored the deepening unrest.
It is the latest move against the CHP, which scored a major victory over Erdogan’s ruling AKP in 2024 local elections and has since gained ground in the polls.
Kilicdaroglu visited the party’s headquarters on Saturday to mark the last day of Eid, with a photo shared by his team on social media showing him sitting at his desk with a copy of the party’s statutes placed prominently in front of him. “I will bring before you a ballot box for the party congress as soon as possible,” Kilicdaroglu said in a speech, without providing a specific date.
“We will hold a clean and completely transparent party congress,” he said. “Our party members will build our party’s safe harbor. We will all go to that safe harbor together.”
Hamish Kinnear, senior analyst at Global Risk Insight, said Kilicdaroglu “lacks majority support and will struggle to restore his legitimacy as leader,” particularly after the storming of the CHP headquarters. He also said that convening a congress would likely take time as Kilicdaroglu’s camp “is stubborn and erects bureaucratic obstacles.”
“And of course, while all this is happening, the CHP will be divided between the Ozel and Kilicdaroglu camps, which will hinder effective opposition to the government,” he said.
“A historic opportunity”
Just 10 kilometers away, Ozel renewed his challenge to Kilicdaroglu to run in the party’s primaries, saying he was ready to run “with the delegates he wants.” As the crowd chanted “Traitor Kemal!” Ozel said the party congress should take place “immediately,” urging Kilicdaroglu to “hold a congress immediately, with delegates of your choice.” Give the party an elected leader without delay.
The CHP does not accept nominations. He also demanded primary elections, saying he would relinquish leadership of the party if he received less than 85 percent support.
“We have a historic opportunity before us. The CHP can emerge from this chaos and turbulence stronger than ever,” he said. Ozel, who now sits in Parliament as head of the party’s legislative group, called the court’s decision a government maneuver to win the next elections, scheduled for 2028.
“The AKP knows that it can no longer win democratic elections. It knows that the Turkish people no longer want it,” he said. “The goal is not the CHP, the real goal is the determination of the people to bring about a change of government.” As Ozel spoke to the crowd, his voice could no longer be heard due to what he was saying, a power outage, and then a generator came online.
He then launched a march to the mausoleum of modern Turkey’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, “with those who love me, the party and their country.”
