Government Raises Concerns About Covid-19’s Psychological Impact on Locals

The Ministry of Health has raised concerns about the psychological effects of Covid-19 on Zimbabweans, leading to the rise of social issues including domestic violence.

According to the ministry, increased community infections are a major cause of the collapse of mental health in Zimbabwe.

As of Saturday night, the country recorded 5893 Covid-19 cases, most of which were locally transmitted. A total of 153 people died of this disease.

Health professionals said Covid-19 caused stigma and some kind of discrimination in people known to have contracted for it.

A few weeks ago, a local nurse talked about blaming the landlord, family, and community of origin, following a report that it was one of the worst affected groups for the Covid-19 infection. did.

In addition to being labeled as a carrier of deadly disease, Covid-19 survivors often suffer from anxiety, depression.

In a statement, the ministry said that people infected with Covid-19 did nothing wrong and they deserve the support, compassion, and kindness of all Zimbabwe.

“The increased outbreak of Covid-19 in Zimbabwe has raised concerns about the mental health of the population. Psychological and social issues continue to increase, leading to stress, anxiety, depression, frustration and uncertainty. However, the consequences of domestic violence are increasing and it is therefore of utmost importance for the people of Zimbabwe to manage their mental health,” he says.

“Healthcare professionals can be afraid, overwhelmed, and experience a lot of stress as the outbreak continues. It is important to recognize these emotions and be aware when they are not coping.”

Healthcare professionals were advised to protect their health by properly wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and following the protocol, especially if the protocol was completed and the PPE removed.

They were also advised to take care of their mental health, take breaks, rest, eat well, get enough sleep, and engage in physical activity as a coping strategy.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, people must be kind to reduce stigma.

“Avoid calling people as cases, victims’ bodies, or people treated for Covid-19 as cases. They also avoid discussions that cause anxiety, stress, fear, and use of alcohol and drugs. Should be avoided.” read the statement.
