Researchers at the University of East Anglia investigated 28,000 patients taking medications used to treat high blood pressure and found that they reduced their risk of death by a third.

They found that these patients were less likely to develop severe Covid-19.

The risk of death for those who were taking angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) was also reduced.

Dr Vassilios Vassiliou, a senior researcher at Norwich Medical University at UEA, said it was already clear that patients with cardiovascular disease were at risk of developing a severe coronavirus infection at the onset of the pandemic.

“But at the beginning of the pandemic, there was concern that certain medications for high blood pressure might be associated with worse outcomes in Covid-19 patients.”

Dr Vassilious said he would like to find out how the effects of these drugs affect people with coronaviruses.

Understanding how these drugs affect Covid-19 patients is especially important as the world accepts the potential for a second wave of infection

Dr. Vasilius Vasiliu

The team investigated the results of patients taking antihypertensive drugs.

They focused on key outcomes including patients admitted to the intensive care unit, patients requiring ventilation, or death.

Next, these findings were compared to unmedicated coronavirus patients.

The team examined data from 19 studies on Covid-19 and blood pressure medications and claimed that this was the largest study to date.

This study was published in Current Atherosclerosis Reports.

Dr. Vassiliou said the team found that one-third of hypertensive Covid patients and one-fourth of all were taking the drug.

“This may be due to an increased risk of infection in patients with comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes.

“But what we really showed is that there is no evidence that these drugs may increase the risk of Covid-19 severity or death.

“On the contrary, they may actually play a protective role, especially in patients with hypertension, as the risk of death and the critical outcome were found to be significantly lower.

“Patients with hypertension Covid-19 who were taking the ACEi / ARB drugs were 0.67 times less likely to have a fatal or fatal outcome than those who were not taking these drugs.

“It’s especially important to understand the impact of these agents on Covid-19 patients, as the world accepts the potential for a second wave of infection.”

He added that studies have shown that these drugs should continue to be used in patients who are already taking them.

“But we can’t address whether acute initiation of such tablets in Covid-19 patients will improve their prognosis, because their mechanisms of action may differ,” he added.

Experts also say that this reassures patients already on medication that they need to continue taking it.

According to Professor Stephen Evans, a professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London, Of the action of the virus.

“Covid-19 is not the only illness that kills older people during a pandemic. The benefits of drugs over other drugs besides Covid-19 can have significant consequences.”

“We still don’t know how the SARS COV-2 virus will be affected by these drugs, so we need to be careful before recommending its use for the prevention of adverse consequences with Covid-19.” He added.
