“But if we could change that from 5%, or 2.5%, we would have 20 years of kidney function.”

Professor Pollock said one of the problems with chronic kidney disease is that it can actually make people look very healthy when the kidneys are suffering.

“It’s actually a very quiet state, and we really need to be reasonably close to 10% of renal function before it develops symptoms that can even encourage doctor visits,” she said.

“Approximately 18% of patients do not really understand that the problem has occurred, so they should start dialysis immediately.”

Professor Pollock said the first step in detecting chronic kidney disease is to check blood pressure, followed by urine and blood tests.

“If your blood pressure is high, it’s a very strong risk of kidney disease,” she said.

Other risk factors include kidney disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, a family history of obesity, and smoking history. People over the age of 60 and people in the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islands are also at higher risk.

Given his family history of kidney disease, his five daughters are sure to recognize some of the early signs of fatigue, fluid retention, and loss of appetite.

Jeeves has been on dialysis for about 18 months and spends seven hours a day in his dialysis chair at home or in the hospital.

“It keeps me alive and is as important as making a living. It’s another job,” he said from Box Hill Hospital in Melbourne.

Jeeves said people should be tested frequently and have regular relationships with specialists and GPs.

“Don’t treat it as an illness in the elderly,” he said.
