Kovacin: Studies find reduced viral replication in rhesus monkeys

The results show reduced viral replication in monkey nasal, throat, and lung tissue. Bharat Biotech recently tweeted that the results demonstrated a protective effect in a live virus challenge model.
New findings from an “animal challenge” study designed to determine whether vaccine candidates can protect animals from disease have shown that the vaccine elicited a strong immune response and protected monkeys from infection. The findings were recently posted to Research Square, an academic preprint server. They need to be peer reviewed.
Bharat Biotech has successfully developed Covaxin in collaboration with the ICMR-National Institute of Virology. Researchers at the ICMR-National Institute of Virology and other institutions have evaluated the protective efficacy and immunogenicity of the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (BBV152) in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulata).
The 20 macaques were divided into 4 groups of 5 each. One group of monkeys received placebo, while the other group of monkeys received three versions of BBV152 with slightly different doses or compositions. According to the research paper, all monkeys received either a placebo injection or a vaccine candidate twice.
Two weeks after the second dose, scientists exposed monkeys to SARS-CoV-2 and deposited large amounts of the virus in the animal’s ducts and both nostrils. Seven days later, scientists detected SARS-CoV-2 RNA or genetic material in placebo monkeys, but vaccinated monkeys lacked detectable viral RNA. Liquid samples from the lungs of vaccinated monkeys were also free of viral genetic material, suggesting that vaccine candidates prevented the virus from replicating and allowed clearance from the lower respiratory tract. Subsequent lung examinations revealed moderate to severe illness in 3 monkeys in the placebo group and mild illness in 2 monkeys.
