GO FOR THE GOLD: Perry Raises Funds and Raises Awareness of Childhood Cancer Month | News
During this month’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, gold bows were hung on the doors and windows of businesses and some homes. Many of these companies have stepped up their efforts to support the local non-profit campground ministries to raise funding and awareness of childhood cancer.
Campground Ministries’ Nancy Perry hosted a Camp Rocks painting party with Farmers and Builders (ACE) hardware, Jerry J’s and Momentum Gym. Perry hosted several private parties this month, spreading a message to raise awareness and instructing children to pray for other children.
“Our area has been hit hard (by childhood cancer),” Perry told the crowd on Saturday at an event hosted by Farmers and Builders.
Perry reported that three local children are currently fighting cancer.
“Children need a special kind of chemotherapy … they need more than 4 percent of the money for research. They have to do a better job for their children.” She went on to mention the fact that only 4 percent of the billions of dollars the US government spends on cancer research each year goes to the treatment of childhood cancer.
At each CAMP (Children Asking for more Prayers) Rocks event, Perry encourages children to pray for other children who fight cancer as they paint the rocks. Then hide the rock in a public place so that someone else can find it, and post the photo on social media with the hashtag “# camprocks4kids”. The next person who finds the rock must pray for the rock and hide it again so that someone else can discover and learn the message of Camp Rock.
“When you hide them (rocks), you pray for children with cancer,” Perry explains. “If you can teach your kids to be kind and love others, it will be of great help in your life, so paint, hide and post on Facebook.”
Thousands of camp locks are hidden in all 50 states and more than 15 countries around the world.
Campground Ministries was founded by Perry’s daughter Sarah Tatum after her two-year-old son Camp (same name) was diagnosed with a brain tumor three years ago. The camp underwent surgery and treatment at St. Jude Children’s Hospital for six months, but was unable to survive his illness.
Currently, Tatum, Perry, and other supporters of Campground Ministries are hosting Camp Rocks events and organizing other fundraising activities to raise awareness and donate to childhood cancer research.
