A prisoner who died Wednesday tested positive for the new coronavirus, a spokesman for the Michigan Correction Bureau confirmed on Friday.

Joe Louis Kearney’s death indicates the first death of a state prisoner confirmed to be COVID-19. He was imprisoned at a paral correctional facility near Jackson, and as of Saturday, 90 prisoners had been confirmed infected with the virus.

Kearney, 55, died in a hospital Wednesday. The hospital tested him for COVID-19 after he died, said Chris Gauts, a spokeswoman for the Office of Corrections.

Gauts I told free press before Kearney had not been tested for COVID-19 in prison and had not contacted staff about symptoms of the virus.

“He never told health care that he was feeling sick or having any symptoms. He knew he was unresponsive in his cell and rushed to the hospital,” Gautz said. He said.

Kearney was jailed for breaking home in Washtenau County.

As of Saturday, 206 prisoners and one parole were First confirmed case March 22 for prisoners.

According to Gauts, as of Friday there were 47 COVID-19 cases among employees in the revision department. One of those employees, a director at the Detroit Reentry Center, Damon Burton, Died of coronavirus Tuesday.
