New restrictions across the UK to stop the spread of “very infectious” bird flu

The UK’s chief veterinarian said new restrictions had been declared across the UK to prevent the spread of “highly infectious” bird flu.

Christine Middlemis said England, Scotland and Wales are now in the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) and bird keeper must follow new legally strict measures.

It was after a new case of bird flu was discovered in captive birds at a poultry farm in Herefordshire on Wednesday.

Last week, two separate and unrelated cases involving captive birds were identified in Kent and Cheshire, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Areas (Defra).

As a result, 13,500 birds were disposed of on the Cheshire farm.

Avian influenza H5N8 has also found “very few” wild geese in Gloucestershire, Devon swans, and wild geese in Dorset.

The UK Public Health Service said the risk to the public from the virus was “very low.”

Under the new measures, breeders with more than 500 birds will need to restrict access to non-essential people on their site.

Workers need to change clothes and footwear before entering the bird pen, and on-site vehicles need to be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis.

Owners of so-called backyards, where the number of poultry such as chickens, ducks and geese is low, are also required to strengthen their biosecurity measures.

Ms. Middlemis said: “Today I have declared the National Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ), which legislate the actions that all bird breeders must take to prevent the spread of the disease to poultry and other poultry.”

She added: “It is legally required to meet enhanced biosecurity requirements for a few or thousands of birds, which is what we should do to protect them from this highly infectious disease.”

The risk level for bird flu invasion of wild birds in the UK was raised from “medium” to “high” last week.

The Food Standards Agency said bird flu poses a “very low” food safety risk to UK consumers.

Poultry products, including properly cooked poultry and eggs, are safe to eat, Defra added.
