Coronavirus Update: Covid-19 Can Be Transmitted From Mother to Baby During Pregnancy
Chinese findings are based on a retrospective study of four newborns in Wuhan, published in the European Respiratory Journal
Their findings are: European Respiratory Journal. A baby born in Wuhan, China, where the outbreak began, gave birth at a cesarean section and experienced only mild symptoms without the need for intensive care. However, the authors acknowledge that there is no direct evidence in four cases of vertical transmission in utero and transmission through the placenta.
Dr. Zhi-Jiang Zhang, lead author of Wuhan University, said:
Dr. Zhang and his colleagues studied four newborns born between December 2019 and March 2020. Three of them were separated from their mothers at birth and were quarantined when symptoms occurred. Two babies had fever, one short of breath, one coughed, and the fourth had no symptoms. All four newborns received supportive care.
Low probability
Based on their findings, researchers believe that no trace of the virus can be found in amniotic fluid or cord blood, but it is unlikely to be transmitted by other means than in utero. The team also said that stringent infections and preventive controls implemented shortly after childbirth would reduce the likelihood of hospital infections, but could not rule out the possibility of transmitting newborns to hospitals.
The new study follows another study published last month at Jama Pediatrics. Scientists reporting three newborns born at Wuhan Children’s Hospital stated that coronavirus infection in utero could not be ruled out.
Tobias Welte, professor of infectious disease at the European Respiratory Society and coordinator of the Covid-19 National Task Force in Germany, who did not participate in the study, said:
“It is also important to promptly and carefully pick up, monitor and treat newborn cases of Covid-19. At this stage, it is not yet known if there are any long-term effects of the infection.”
