First Covid Vaccination in Northern Ireland | UTV
The first vaccination in Northern Ireland was a 28-year-old nurse in Dundrum, County Down.
Joanna Sloan is Northern Ireland’s largest Belfast Health and Social Care Trust Covid vaccination sister.
She received Pfizer / BioNTech at the Mass Immunization Center at Royal Victoria Hospital on Tuesday morning.
Sloan is a former emergency department nurse and has been in her profession for six years.
She is engaged, but the wedding has been postponed due to a pandemic. She has a 5-year-old daughter.
She is only one of a team of more than 800 vaccinated people involved in subsequent deployment programs.
Health Minister Robin Swan described the day as a “very important day,” but warned that the entire program would take months to implement.
Community-wide healthcare professionals will be vaccinated until the rest of December at seven centers throughout the region.
On Monday, Swan announced that care home residents would also be prioritized in the first phase.
He said the deployment of vaccines to long-term care facilities would proceed in the coming days.
The minister said authorities are working on the logistical requirements for Pfizer / BioNTech vaccines and have reached a solution involving mobile teams operating from various trust vaccine centers.
“We are currently looking at how we can extend these arrangements to include people over the age of 80 in our community,” Swan added.
Inventory of coronavirus vaccine arrived in Northern Ireland on Friday.
The first batch of vaccine has 25,000 doses.
Inventory is transported to a central storage facility operated by a private company. The location is not open to the public.
Two facilities are located on the premises of the hospital-Ulster Hospital in Dundonald and Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast-and the rest in the leisure center.
The center operates 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.
