University of Florida Health Administers First COVID-19 Vaccine to Frontline Workers
Dr. Joseph A. Tindall was one of the first people to get the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday morning in Gainesville.

UF Health Shands Hospital administered the first 12 vaccines from UF Health Jacksonville at a press conference early Wednesday morning. Tindall, the chair of emergency medicine and a doctor in the emergency room, was the second person to be vaccinated.
Pfizer and BioNTech received an emergency use authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration to distribute the vaccine on Friday, shortly after which the vaccine began to be distributed to hospitals nationwide.

“Ten tens of thousands of UF Health staff here in Gainesville are awake every day hoping to make a difference,” said Ed Jimenez, CEO of UF Health. “They were scared, but they were doing their best. Nine months later, they were really tired.”
Dr. Parker Gibbs, Chief Medical Officer at the University of Florida Health, said he expects all University of Florida health workers to be vaccinated within two months.
“We still have a lot of weightlifting and we continue to wear PPE,” he said. “But now there is a flicker at the end and I think we’re going to see the light.”
Frontline doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals are vaccinated first.
