Coronavirus Emergencies: Expert Review Can’t Find Single Case of Child Infecting Adults With Coronavirus
No children had adults infected with the coronavirus. A major review of evidence for the virus was found.
Studies on the effects of Covid-19 on young children suggest that they “do not play a significant role” in the spread of the virus and are less likely to be infected than adults.
Experts say more evidence is needed, but contact tracing conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) did not indicate that children under the age of 10 were infected with the virus.
Swiss health officials have announced that children under the age of 10 pose no danger to their grandparents, so they can hug their grandparents again.
A review, now jointly conducted with the Royal College of Pediatrics (RCPCH), found evidence of “consistent evidence of infection and reduced infectivity of children in the route of transmission.”
The study, led by Dr. Alasdair Munro, a clinical researcher in childhood infections, concludes: That is rare.
“The role of children in the transmission is unknown, but it is likely that they do not play a significant role.”
According to a review of the Don’t Forget The Bubbles Pediatrics Research Project, “the joint committee of China and WHO was unable to recall an episode during follow-up of a child-to-adult infected contact.”
Public health French epidemiologist Costas Danis said that the fact that children had milder illnesses might explain why they didn’t get the virus.
He said the children could be infected by others, but he had no precedent and “there was no evidence that closing the school was an effective tool.”
Further evidence from China pointed out when the family was infected by the virus, and the children were “less likely to be an index case.”
“There is no evidence that children are involved in the spread or transmission of the virus,” said RCPCH chairman Professor Russell Viner.
But it’s too early to say that the kids hug their grandparents, especially since they are the most vulnerable group in their 70s, he said.
