Coronavirus attacks 80 nursing homes in Missouri
O’Fallon, Missouri (AP) — Coronavirus has infected approximately 80 nursing home and nursing home residents in Missouri, according to new information released by the state.
On Friday, the Missouri Department of Health Services first listed information about cases identified in “communal living facilities.” This includes facilities that provide nursing or convalescent care. The list of states includes the number of county facilities in which they occur. Individual facilities are not specified.
After all, the virus has been confirmed in 79 facilities, including 46 in St. Louis, 12 in St. Louis, and 9 in St. Charles. Two facilities are affected in both Franklin and Jackson counties. There is one facility in each of the Adair, Cass, Greene, Jefferson, Moniteau, Pemiscot, Platte and Scott counties.
State reports do not list the number of confirmed coronavirus-related cases or deaths at the facility. However, local health officials have confirmed that more than 30 residents of nursing homes have died in COVID-19 in Missouri. Five at Provence Park, a long-term care facility in Springfield and St. Louis County.
Nationally, deaths in more than 11,000 nursing homes are associated with COVID-19.
For most people, the coronavirus clears mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough in a few weeks. For some people, especially older people and those with existing health problems, it can cause more serious illnesses, including pneumonia.
The State Department of Health said Saturday that 359 asymptomatic employees and contract workers at Triumph Foods pork processing plant in St. Joseph tested positive for coronavirus. The state tested more than 2,300 workers this week. About 30 workers with symptoms previously diagnosed as virus positive. The factory is still in operation.
Missouri has now exceeded 8,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The state reported 319 newly confirmed cases on Saturday, bringing the total to 8,154. The death toll reached 351 and another 14 died. However, the actual number of infections is believed to be much higher than the number of confirmed cases. This is because many people have not been tested and research suggests that they can get infected without feeling sick.
Companies in the state are preparing to reopen on Monday after Governor Mike Person’s home order is over. However, in St. Louis and counties, local orders will remain in place until mid-May.
