Britain’s ruling Labor Party must commit to rejoin the EU at the next general election, London Mayor Sadiq Khan told CNBC.

In an interview on Monday, Prime Minister Khan acknowledged his party’s disastrous performance in last week’s local elections. He called on the government to be “bolder and braver” in delivering on its promises as party lawmakers publicly discuss replacing Keir Starmer as prime minister.

“People are frustrated with the lack of speed of delivery,” Khan told CNBC’s Ritika Gupta.

“We were not bold enough, not brave enough. We are at risk of losing significantly in the next general election.”

Khan welcomed Starmer’s speech after the election result, in which the prime minister said the British government would rebuild relations with the European Union, including strengthening links with the bloc’s single market and customs union.

Prime Minister Khan said, “If Labor wins the next general election, we will go to the next general election with a manifesto containing a clear promise to rejoin the European Union.” A general election must be held no later than August 2029.

The country left the bloc in 2020, after the “Leave” campaign won a 52% victory in the 2016 referendum.

Khan, mayor of Europe’s largest financial centre, called Brexit “the greatest act of economic self-harm that any country has ever committed.”

Prime Minister Khan said Britain could solve its cost-of-living crisis by creating more wealth and prosperity, adding: “The best way to do this is to rejoin the largest trading bloc on our doorstep.”

Prime Minister Khan emphasized that ‘big changes’, including US President Donald Trump’s tariffs, have harmed global trade since Labor won the 2024 general election.

Khan added that the conflict between Iran and Ukraine has increased the cost of living and energy prices and that people “need to acknowledge and be aware of the headwinds abroad.”

On relations with the United States, Prime Minister Khan said people should remember “how unpredictable the current president is.”

He added: “It’s very difficult to relate to someone who is assertive or disruptive but certainly behaves in a way that is difficult to predict.”

Prime Minister Khan added that it is unprecedented for a US president to impose tariffs, advocate protectionism, adopt unilateralism, withdraw from a climate change agreement, talk about withdrawing from NATO and, depending on his mood, back out of a deal signed literally days or weeks later.

But he said the relationship between the two countries was about “more than personalities” and that Starmer had “made a good case for how you can be friends with the United States and close to the European Union.”

He said last week’s election result was “more than a bombshell” for the party, acknowledging that Labour’s policy successes had been overshadowed by “fundamental mistakes and mishaps”.

But Khan urged caution about replacing Starmer.

“When I talk to people around the world – investors, CEOs, venture capitalists – they see the UK as a place that provides calm, stability and certainty,” he said.
